South Bend is famous for being the home of Avanti and the Studebaker Plant, Oliver Plow Company, Singer Sewing Machine Co. and all the industries that supported that. In the early days of South Bend, the founders and their industry had the vision to dam up the St. Joseph River (before steam and electric emerged) where industry had their paddle wheels in the river and drive shafts going to their factories to drive the equipment.
Back during this time is also when Notre Dame was established and their education became an important part of society. Today there are many colleges along with museums here in South Bend with the supporting community makes it a wonderful place to live.
On April 16, 2015 I had the pleasure of taking Jay Leno from the DoubleTree here in South Bend to the Studebaker Museum in an Avanti I used to own. It was a 2007 yellow in color and only had 104 miles on it at the time. Jay was impressed.
After spending 3 1/2 hours at the Studebaker National Museum we then came across the street to my Avanti Guest House #1 where he spent another 1/2 hour viewing my memorabilia.
It was a very memorable day!.

The University of Notre Dame was founded in November 1842 by Rev. Edward F. Sorin, C.S.C., a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, a French missionary order. It is located adjacent to South Bend, Indiana, with a population of more than 315,000. Chartered by the state of Indiana in 1844, the University was governed by the Holy Cross priests until 1967, when governance was transferred to a two-tiered, mixed board of lay and religious trustees and fellows.
One of South Bend most famous local attractions; the university hosts many things:

In 1906, Clement Studebaker (wagon days) donated this electric fountain to the city of South Bend. Around 1943, the concrete had deteriorated badly and metal was needed for the war effort and the fountain was to be scrapped.
Fortunately, some leaders realized the significance of retaining some points of interest for the future and saved the fountain. The History Museum here in South Bend gathered the remains from various sources to reconstruct the fountain. They found the original manufacturer which still had the original molds that were used to reproduce the items needed. The community pulled together to enable this beautiful project in 2019.
The Planter was originally dedicated in 1909 as a fountain located in front of the Charles Martin Youth Centeralong Lincolnway West.
In 1989 the South Bend Parks Department donated the old fountain to the South Bend Heritage Foundation and it was moved to its current location as a planter and history piece.
The Ironwood Drive Bridge over the St. Joseph River is unique because its open-spandrel style features a larger vertical clearance than other open-spandrel bridges in the area.
The bridge built in 1940 has 3 main spans, each 130 feel each, with a main arch super structure unlike others in the area. The arch superstructure appears to be original and makes this bridge an very impressive bridge to view.
